I’ve been talking about this on the blog and on twitter for quite a while now and it’s good to finally be able to announce a date certain when I will be able to share with you this story in written form.  It’s been a long road since the podcast back in 2010, quite possibly too long.  But I have no regrets and I think when you all see the finished product you’ll agree it was worth the wait.

Those who listened to the podcast, might notice some minor edits and adjustments made between the forthcoming Kindle release and the podcast you remember.  These edits were put in place to clean up and expand some of the ambiguous science.  Some of the style and phrasing was adjusted to better reflect the things I’ve learned as a writer and a couple of the bigger “um…no…” reactions from listener feedback were addressed.  In all, less than 5% of the existing words were changed, and just under 1,100 new words were added to flesh out the universe.  But the story plot and sequence of events remains unchanged.

For the time being, Cybrosis will be exclusive to Kindle.  I intend to release ePub version through the Nook store, but I have to do more research on that aspect of things.  That said, I anticipate it going live there in January 2012.  Cybrosis will not be released via Smashwords until they complete their announced 2012 upgrade of their meatgrinder when they will start accepting ePub formatted books.  It will also be available from pcharing.net and cybrosisnovel.com for direct purchase in both Kindle and ePub formats and I’m looking into options for adding inscriptions and author signatures to the files sold directly.  Yes, it is possible to sign ebooks.  All formats will be priced at $2.99.

There is much work still to be done over the next month and as such I am turning to you all for help.  Please buy copies for yourself.  Please tell your friends, family, and anyone else who might be interested in reading this book.  It’s launching just in time for the holiday season and gifting eBooks on Amazon’s site is extremely easy.  If you have blogs, please discuss, if you have podcasts that take interviews I’d love to come on your show.  If you do book reviews, let me know and I’ll send you an ARC.  I will NOT be coordinating an “Amazon Rush”, but I do want to make things as visible as possible for the book and I will need your help to do it.  In the past, I’ve tried not to be one of those “Hi!  Please buy my book” people.  I don’t plan to become on of those people, but I do need your support.

First, I’m back from Balticon!  The con was a personal success for me and provided a wonderful opportunity to connect with the cast, meet some of the audience, and hopefully open the novel up to a larger audience.  So if you’re new to the site from Balticon welcome and thanks so much for stopping by.  I hope you like what you see and hear!

As long as I’m discussing Balticon I should also let you know that we were able to record the cast rountable and exit interview, codename: Cybreakfast!  We had all of the main cast members in attendance, a handful of cameo voices, and a few friends and listeners sit in on what turned into almost an hour and a half of conversation, discussion, jokes, and a little roasting here and there.  The audio needs a little cleaning up but I’m in process with it and it should go live after the final feedback episodes.

Yes, I said feedback episodes.  I sat down last night to record the feedback episode with Christiana Ellis and J. Daniel Sawyer.  After a few technical glitches (The maiden voyage of Off the Deep End Studios v2.0 had some bumps getting out of port) we were able to get through a fair portion of the feedback.  Unfortunately the hour started getting late so we had to table the rest until we can record again next week.  But fear not!  I’ll be editing voicemail episode 3 part 1 later today and tomorrow and hope to have it out and on the feed by Friday morning.

One of the products of that conversation is the addition of a tip-jar paypal button here on the site.  If you haven’t noticed it you’ll find it on the sidebar on the right, directly under the subscription links.  I know there have been several of you out there who have asked about leaving a tip and in response, here it is.  If you are inclined to leave a contribution to help offset the costs of producing the podcast, I thank you in advance.

It’s been a long chapter, and an even longer week for me, so I’ll beg your forgiveness that there’s no banter this week.  I hope you enjoyed the cliffhanger last week and the subsequent resolution in today’s episode.   As always, please keep the feedback coming.  There are new iTunes reviews up as well as some great comments on the website and even a few voice mail calls.  But the more the merrier as we gear up for the second feedback episode.

We’re into the back half of the book now so expect things to start ratcheting up very quickly as Ciris continues her pursuit.  Who is Xavier Allenrod?  What happened that Briggs wants both buried and fixed?  What will Ciris do now that she’s on her own?  What will happen when Chen catches up to Ciris and the two friends and former colleagues find themselves with opposing agendas?  And what about that viris, and the hacker that tipped this whole thing off in the first place?

Some of these questions will be answered next week.  The others may just keep you guessing right up until the very end.

For those of you returning to the site, welcome back!  For those of you stopping in for the first time thank you very much for checking out the blog.

Cybrosis is a cyberpunk action adventure novel filled with conspiracies, betrayals, and surprises when a botched mission leads Ciris, the world’s first cyborg down a rabbit hole and into a conspiracy that threatens her very being.

For those of you unfamiliar with the podcast novel format, basically it’s like an audio book that’s delivered on a regular episodic basis.  Think of the old radio plays of yesteryear and you’ve got a fairly good grasp on the concept.  Like those plays, Cybrosis enjoys a full voice cast plus narrator, music soundtrack, and minimal sound effects.  Episodes are released on a weekly basis on Friday Mornings (U.S. Central time) with the podcast’s first run going from January 1, 2010 through May 14, 2010.  Special feedback episodes are littered within, and additional ‘wrap up’ episodes will air after the May 14 finish of the novel.

First and foremost, I’d like to announceour own Heather Welliver has given birth to a very healthy 7 lbs. 7 oz boy on April 16.  The Grailpup, as he is known on the interwebs, is doing well and I wish both Heather and Marc all the best as they adapt to their lives as parents.

Through it all, production continues.  Scripts are out and the first eight chapters are all now in various stages of the production process.  I still don’t have a solid launch date yet, but I expect to know a lot more once I get back from Balticon at the end of the month.

Work on the cover art continues and I’m very excited with where things are at this stage.  I’ve selected the cover at this time, and am working with J.R. Blackwell and Jared Axelrod to finalize the details and graphic design.  I’m very excited and can’t wait to unveil this to you all!

I’m also working on one or two related projects that I’m not yet ready to discuss in any detail at the moment.  But, things are progressing quite well.

One other thing, there is a chance that the feeds for this podcast and blog will be changing ever so sligtly.  So, if you’re reading this entry via an RSS feed I’ll ask that you keep your eye out over here.  I’ll try to make this as painless as possible, but I will need some audience participation to make the change over work.  Those of you subscribed to the podcast feed will also need to make an adjustment or two, but I’ll send out an audio file to your pod catchers when I’m ready to proceed.

As for a production update -  Tomorrow, before the big game I’ll be in studio cutting together more of Chapter 3.  The previous hurdles slowing down production have been overcome and I should have things well in order before kickoff.

Well, it seems that these production updates are going to be on a monthly schedule.  And as I write this, the first entry of 2009 (Happy New Year to you all, by the way) I find that the past month has been a roller coaster in terms of Production.  While the actual production process has been slower than I’d like, there still has been a lot going on.

First, cover art goes well.  The fantastically talented J.R. Blackwell is working on a photographic cover for the album art.  I’ve seen her test shots and while I’m not revealing anything quite yet, I’m very exicited with the progress.  We’re working together to tweak the tests into the final product and I’m very excited to see where this leads.

I’ve also been working on some promotional approaches for the podcast.  Last month, I comissioned a promo from Tee Morris.  This is more of a teaser promo for the novel but it’s already starting to make it’s rounds in the podisphere.  I’ll post it to the blog in the next few days.  There are a few ideas for an overall promotion plan that I’ve been working through in the back of my mind.  Nothing’s ready to announce quite yet, but when things do come to fruition I’ll make sure to let you all know.

Now, this is all well and good, but why has the actual production been so slow?  Why haven’t I announced a release date, and what will it take?  All very good questions with very related answers.

As I said in the first production update, I feel very strongly that you all deserve a production that makes a weekly run without significant delays, so far as I can help it.  I’ve always known that life can and will get in the way of podcasting production, and even in the first stages of the process, Cybrosis has been no exception.  In this case it’s a lot of things.  For me personally, I have been far busier than I anticipated.  Since the Christmas Holiday, I have not had a full weekend at home to work on production.  There’s been a lot of traveling on various family functions and obligations, from reuninons, to birthdays, to shows, and more.  The good news is that my schedule, at least at home, is settling down a little bit and I should be able to get into the routine I’ve sought since this process started.

So, I’ll keep this brief.  As more updates become available, please check back here for the latest news.  The RSS feed is live and active and you can subscribe to the blog with either the link on the right, or a direct link to the following URL -  http://feeds.feedburner.com/cybrosis

That link will work in any RSS reader, as well as a manual add in iTunes.  As we draw closer, I will have a dedicated iTunes link, but for right now, with no audio content, it’s a bit early to bring an official iTunes feed into the mix.

It’s been a little over a month since the last update and it seems that both a lot, and not a lot has gone on in the studios.  Production on the actual podcast has actually slowed considerably.  I’ve had a few of my actors re-record their lines, but as you’d expect with the cooling weather, and the coming holidays, things have gotten hectic and busy.

But this is not to say nothing’s gone on.  While I wait for the Chapter 2 re-records, I’ve been auditioning music for the project.  Also there are some new updates to the Cast pages, as well as a new contributors page.  I’ve also been working on securing additional music for use later in the project, and have been talking to a contact of mine about doing the story so far segments.    I’m not ready to announce any details as of yet, but things are moving.

So, I hope you all have a great holiday, and an even better new year.  I expect my next post will be in January.

So about production?  Well, I’m in the process of putting together Chapter 1.  The voice recording from my actors is all done and turned back and I’ve cut the episode together.  Its out with some first listeners right now, and assuming it passes muster (both theirs and mine own), I’ll be laying in bed music later this week.  Chapter 2 scripts are out to the actors and already some recorded parts are coming in.

Now, in case you’re wondering “Well it sounds like you’re making progress, why not launch?”  Simply because the production is taking me longer to do than I’d like.  I’m still ironing out my work flow for this production, and I feel very strongly that I want to present the novel in straight run with the only breaks being for fan appreciation episodes.  You all are investing time in the novel, and I will return that investment with the vow that there will be no production delays within my control.  Unfortunately, that means it’ll be a little bit longer before the production goes live, but in the long run, I think it will be well worth the wait.
